Edit project files beside your agent in Paneflow

Updated

The Files tab in Paneflow brings the project tree and an editor beside your agent's terminal. Read the code it just changed, adjust a configuration value, or correct a line, then save without leaving Paneflow.

Updated guide. This article originally announced the Files sidebar in Paneflow 0.3.6. It now describes the integrated editor in Paneflow 0.17.5.

Open, edit, and save a file

  1. Select the project tab, then open Files in the dock. The tree shows files from that checkout, including when you use a worktree.
  2. Open the text file you want to edit and check its path. The agent's terminal stays visible while you edit.
  3. Make your correction, then save with Ctrl+S (Cmd+S on macOS). The unsaved indicator clears when saving succeeds.

Use Ctrl+Z to undo an edit and Ctrl+Shift+Z to redo it. On macOS, use Cmd instead of Ctrl. Ctrl+Y also redoes on Windows and Linux. If you undo after saving, save again to write the new state to disk.

Next, open Changes to review the diff against the latest commit (HEAD). This view reads files on disk, so your edits appear there after you save.

Read changes through Git markers

Git markers in the editor gutter identify lines changed relative to HEAD. Select a marker to read the previous text or copy it with Copy when available.

Revert restores the block in the editor. You can undo that restoration with Ctrl+Z, and you need to save to write it to disk. This lets you remove a specific change while keeping the file's other corrections.

When another process edits the same file

Your agent or another editor can write to a file already open in Files. If you have no unsaved edits, Paneflow reloads the disk content. Otherwise, it shows a conflict and blocks saving until you choose a version:

  • Keep mine keeps your text in the editor. Saving afterward replaces the disk version with that content.
  • Reload loads the disk version and discards your unsaved edits.

If you need parts of both versions, copy your edits before choosing Reload, then reapply them to the reloaded file. Paneflow does not automatically merge the two versions.

If you cannot edit or save

A file marked read-only opens with editing disabled. Very long lines can also make a file read-only. Binary files, files over the size limit, and files that are not UTF-8 do not open in the text editor; use a tool suited to their format.

If saving fails, the edits visible in the editor are not saved. Copy them before fixing the reported problem: permissions, a missing folder, or a full disk. Then try saving again.

Once the correction is saved, review the diff in Changes and run the relevant tests in the project's terminal.
